Journey
There are places in this world which are close to the boundaries of convention. One such place is Miryang which literally translates to Secret Sunshine. The movie begins with the shot of the sky and ends with a shot of the earth. It tells the story of a woman who moves away from Seoul after her husband died in an accident. The character sketches are based on dialogues. The plot of the film is extremely spatial. It takes its own time to bring itself to the audiences understanding. There are several open ends at various stages of the film which leaves a lot for the viewer to interpret.
Shin-ae comes to this religious town with her son. She is mostly dogged several characters who inhabit this town. One of them is a mechanic who starts liking from the very start of the film. Shin-ae tries to avoid his advances but is forced to meet him because she wanted to buy some land. But word spreads fast of the new person in the town and people begin to intrude in all sorts of ways. They look at her sympathetically because she comes to the town where her husband lived. There is a streak of both innocence and anger on her face most of the time. But the character is faced with a dilemma moment her son is kidnapped.
The incident really traumatizes her life to the extent that it builds up as a burden of guilt which affects physically and mentally. People try to help her out especially the man who keeps following her. She ends up taking to religion to wash away her sorrows. But this takes a u-turn the moment she meets her son's kidnapper and killer. She meets him to absolve him of his sins. By then the prisoner has been absolved and he has taken to the word of God. This leads to the third part of this women's journey in this town - a point of no return.
The movie takes up the issue of forgiveness not as a right to passage to the other world. Instead it creates a huge gulf of sorrow and pain which this woman has to endure daily. The performance of Jeon Do Yeon is at par with the likes of Emma Watson in Breaking the Waves. There are some great moments of breakdown which almost lifts the film to a sublime effort. The lighter moments are more of irony which the director has used to his credit not to ridicule but to affect the audience.
